The maximum settable stepper current for the stepper motors (NEMA 17) on the Ender 3 is 2.0A, but we will want to use a lower value. Something like 0.9 or 0.8. I will be using a TMC2208 stepper driver. The TMC2208 has a max output of 1.2A RMS. TMC2208 : Vref = I * 1.4 (I=Steppe-current (In my opinion that is the 0.84A value)). Result : Vref = 0.84 * 1.40 = 1.176V. ... A sub-reddit for the users of the Creality Ender 3 3D printer. Please be friendly and helpful. Please be friendly and … I've upgraded my Anycubic I3 Mega (Trigorilla) "S" to the TMC2208 drivers. I've found on forums various guidelines for the reference voltages: 0.85V, 1.06V, 1.2V, with someone saying 1.5V needed on E0. After installing the TMC2208's and with the motors removed, I've checked the reference voltages and found them to be (X,Y,Z,E0, E1)= (1.11, 1.11, 1.09, 1.18, 1.11)V and left them like that. Now ... I have a stock ender 3 mainboard from creality as well, labelled V1.1.4 200101051. The sense resistors have the labels R100 which equals 0.1 Ohms. The octal buffer chip says HC541 TH37101. The best way to set the motor current on TMC2xxx SilentStepSticks with a potentiometer is by measuring the voltage on the Vref pin (0…2.5V) and adjusting the voltage with the potentiometer. The maximum settable motor current is 1.77A RMS (0.11 Ohm sense resistors), but the TMC21xx/TMC2208 SilentStepSticks can only be used up to 1.2A RMS . Several people have asked how to do the upgrade to TMC Stepper drivers, which are both quieter and have better print quality. DaHai Zhu has some awesome videos on the A5 - and he's now working on a series of 3 videos that make it really easy to install the TMC2208 in a variety of methods. If you haven't already, I definitely recommend you check out his channel! According to the Trinamic TMC2208 datasheet (page 5), a benefit to using the chip configured as Option 3 (UART) is that all control lines (EN, DIAG, INDEX, MS1, MS2, and analog current setting VREF) are replaced by the one UART line, and therefore are configured through, and controlled by, firmware.
